How to check if ChatGPT recommends your business
The short answer
Ask ChatGPT and Claude the exact questions your customers ask, like “best roofer in Orlando”, in a private window, at least five times each, and write down every business named. Do it yourself in 20 minutes
- Write down three questions your customers ask, the way they’d say them: “emergency plumber near Kissimmee”, “best AC repair in Mesa”.
- Use a private or logged-out window, so your own history doesn’t change the answer.
- Ask each question five times in ChatGPT and five times in Claude, in a new chat each time.
- Write down every business named, and whether you were one of them.
- Count. If you were named in 2 of 30 answers and a competitor in 18, that gap is your starting point.
Why one ask isn’t enough
AI answers change from one ask to the next. A single answer that names you, or leaves you out, says very little. Asking many times shows how often you’re named, which is what decides how many customers the assistant sends you.
